Abstract

Until recently in the Russian education system learners of English studied English with the goal of communicating mostly with native speakers about their own culture and Russian life. That is why Russian English textbooks contained materials about Great Britain, the United States, or, rarely, about Australia in their comparison with Russia. The last two decades intensified the necessity to speak about Russian culture and values (Kabakchi V Osnovy angloyazychnoi mezhkulturnoi kommunikatsii[Fundamentals of English intercultural communication/In Russian]. Moscow University Publishers, Moscow, 2004). The need to study other cultures through English has resulted in a growing engagement in research and teaching, since in a closed society as the Soviet Union was, intermediary contacts through a third language, a lingua franca, took place much more seldom than direct contacts. That is why to communicate with Asia, specialists were trained in schools of Asian studies (Oriental departments). This gave rise to developing direct translation from Asian languages into Russian and vice versa. With the lifting of the bamboo curtain, Russian communicators encountered the necessity to use English in their interaction with Asian people. This has caused a number of problems of intercultural communication via English, which are discussed in this chapter.

    Wade-Giles was widely-used to transcribe Chinese words in English for most of the twentieth century, including reference books (e.g., Encyclopedia Britannica, 1999 <http://www.eb.com>). Wade–Giles spellings and pinyin spellings for Taiwanese place names and words are still used interchangeably in English-language texts (e.g., Bates and Bates 1995).
