Abstract
Nanoscience and nanotechnology include a novel class of engineered nanomaterials that is gaining significant recognition to pursuit in the existing and emerging biological, medical, and engineering applications. This chapter will provide a brief overview of nanotechnology with an emphasis on nanoparticle properties, novel methodologies for nanomaterial synthesis, and the various techniques used to assess nanoparticle characteristics such as size, shape, surface properties, purity, and crystallinity. Finally a broad outline of the numerous applications of nanoparticles will be described, with primary focus on biotechnological and biomedical applications.
