Part of the book series: Cellular Origin, Life in Extreme Habitats and Astrobiology ((COLE,volume 22))

Abstract

The formation of isolated biochemical systems is important for the origin of life similarly to the evolution of individual functional molecules. The isolation process creates systemic assemblies of biological functions composed of several chemical processes. Therefore, the contribution of lipid components in the early stages of evolution must be of great significance. In this chapter, we discuss possible scenarios for the origin of cell membranes based on the polyprenyl phosphate hypothesis of Ourisson and Nakatani, and our findings on anomalies of lipid properties at interfaces. We contend that life has its origins at appropriate interfaces.
