Abstract
This chapter provides a personalized account of how and why the authors (Ellerton and Clements) became interested in cyphering books. It also tells how the authors came to believe that the early history of school mathematics in North America between 1607 and about 1861 needed to be rewritten—because previous historians had not recognized the fundamentally powerful influence of the cyphering tradition. The chapter closes with a statement of five research questions.
