Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the early education al system in China and several major transitions in early childhood. Before they enter the grade schools, young children in China may go through three types of early education programs: child care or nursery (birth to 3), kindergarten (3–6), or pre-primary (5–6). Specifically, four relevant topics were addressed. First, the historical background and theoretical foundations of the Chinese Early Childhood Education were reviewed. Then, the evolution of the early childhood curricula was explored. After that, major transitions for young children were introduced. Finally, the social and cultural influences in preparing young children for schools were discussed.
