Abstract

This chapter presents our descriptive overview of the collegial tradition in higher education. It is an interpretation that is heavily, although not exclusively, dependent upon an analysis of the two ancient English models of the university – the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, which we see as representing two variants of the same model. However, this is not yet another dissection of the peculiar practices of Oxbridge.
