Abstract
Abstract: Whereas most of the world's large cities have to cover their water requirements from rivers or ground water reservoirs, Vienna is able to get its drinking water from Alpine springs: pure Alpine Springwater in its natural state is conducted from its sources in the mountains to the city. This water is almost miraculously pure, especially considering the environmental pollution, which is so widespread today.

The foundation of Vienna's modern water supply system was laid long ago with the construction of the First Vienna Alpine Springwater Main, which has its source in the mountain range of Rax-Schneeberg-Schneealpe, and the Second Vienna Alpine Springwater Main, which has its source in the Hochschwab area. These water mains rightfully enjoy international renown and no doubt figure among the municipality's major achievements.
