Abstract
Knowledge of anatomy is a necessary prerequisite to assess and plan the means and methods to deal with traumatic wrist injuries. A number of anatomical studies and improved imaging methods of anatomical wrist structures have indicated that wrist anatomy constitutes a continuously evolving field, for which there is still a lot to be discovered. The great variety associated with the appearance and structure of wrist ligaments, as well as the anatomical variations of the articular surfaces of the wrist bones, may partly justify the differences observed in the kinematic behaviour and the predisposition to injuries of different individuals’ wrists. This chapter includes a detailed description of the wrist ligaments, of the diversity in their appearance, as well as their functional significance. The morphology and ligamentous restraints of the scaphoid are also analyzed, while the morphologies of the radiocarpal, midcarpal and distal radioulnar joint are described. The vascularity of the wrist bones and the nerve distribution of carpal ligaments, particularly at a microscopic level, are also covered in this chapter.
