Riassunto
Il Capitolo 5 è stato dedicato ai processi stocastici a stati discreti, cioè le catene di Markov e i processi descritti da una master equation. In molti problemi fisici è peró necessario considerare il caso in cui gli stati varino in modo continuo, o perché la variabile aleatoria X è intrinsecamente continua (per esempio la posizione nello spazio) o perché la discretizzazione è così fine che è più conveniente considerare una variazione continua (per esempio quando il numero di individui di una popolazione diventa molto grande). In questo caso, al posto della master equation descritta nel capitolo precedente, l’evoluzione della probabilità sarà governata da una equazione alle derivate parziali detta equazione di Fokker-Planck.
