Abstract

The therapeutic strategy in squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus depends on the possibility to obtain a R0 resection, which is deemed essential in the cure of this disease. An understanding of the routes of neoplastic diffusion is thus the first step in planning treatment strategy. This chapter addresses both the indications for surgical resection and the long-term results with respect to survival and patterns of recurrence.
