Abstract
Despite advances in antimicrobial and surgical therapies, severe peritonitis remains a potentially fatal disease. Furthermore, infections due to spontaneous gastrointestinal perforation and those resulting from injuries or complications of abdominal operations, still represent a challenge for surgeons.
