Nonostante la sua efficace funzione di barriera protettiva nei confronti di sostanze estranee, insulti meccanici e radiazioni ultraviolette, la pelle non rappresenta una struttura totalmente impermeabile alle specie chimiche; i principi attivi contenuti nelle preparazioni topiche possono, infatti, penetrare attraverso la cute ed essere assorbiti, esplicando un effetto a livello locale e/o sistemico (Fig. 13.1).
