I meccanismi fisiopatologici alla base della cefalea di tipo tensivo (CTT) sono solo in parte noti. Mentre precedenti definizioni, come cefalea muscolo-tensiva o cefalea psicogena, suggerivano l’intervento causale diretto della contrazione muscolare e/o di particolari stati psicologici, attualmente si ipotizza una genesi multifattoriale della CTT, basata sia su meccanismi periferici che centrali.
