In un articolo del 1963 su Scientific American, Dirac affermò che “è più importante avere belle equazioni che equazioni in accordo con esperimenti”1. Effettivamente la ricerca della bellezza matematica è stato il tratto distintivo della sua opera e ha dato frutti paragonabili a quelli di Newton e Einstein, anche se talvolta lo ha indotto a battaglie isolate nella comunità scientifica. Il lavoro solitario, d’altra parte, è stato l’altro elemento dominante della vita di Dirac. Nella sua vasta produzione scientifica — composta da oltre 190 lavori — tra articoli e libri, il suo nome è associato a quello di qualche collaboratore soltanto in quattro casi.
