Comparison of Glycosyltransferase Families Using the Profile Hidden Markov Model

Abstract

Several research groups have attempted to classify glycosyltransferases using sequence similarities, e.g., the CAZy (Carbohydrate-Active enZYmes) database (Coutinho et al. 2003). However, the structural, functional, and evolutionary relationships of glycosyltransferases are still unknown. We classified 47 of the 60 families from the CAZy database into four superfamilies using the profile hidden Markov model (HMM) method to reveal relationships between structure and function in glycosyltransferases.
