Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is known to be synthesized enzymatically in a tightly regulated manner by a number of tissues and cell types. The NO produced by cells serves a wide variety of functions in such cells as vascular endothelia, immune cells, neurons and glia, hepatocytes, and smooth muscle cells (for review, Bredt and Snyder 1994; Knowles and Moncada 1994; Nathan and Xie 1994). The functions of NO are diverse, having actions on vascular tone, neurotransmission (Bredt and Snyder 1994), immune cytotoxicity (Nüssler and Billiar 1993), and others.
