Die industrielle Ökologie propagiert den Wechsel von linearen industriellen Prozessen, in denen aus Rohstoffen letztendlich Abfälle werden, hin zur Schließung von Kreisläufen, bei denen Reststoffe wieder als Rohstoffe für neue Prozesse genutzt werden. Dieses Prinzip findet in zunehmendem Masse auch auf dem Sektor der Lebensmittelindustrie Anwendung.
