Die geometrischen Prinzipien zur Packung von Kugeln gelten nicht nur für reine Elemente. Wie zu erwarten, finden wir die im vorigen Kapitel beschriebenen Kugelpackungen sehr häufig auch dann, wenn einander ähnliche Atome kombiniert werden, insbesondere bei den zahlreichen Metallegierungen und intermetallischen Verbindungen. Darüberhinaus gelten die gleichen Prinzipien aber auch für viele Verbindungen aus sehr unterschiedlichen Elementen.
