Auguste Calinon (1850–1900) est né en Lorraine, et fait ses études à l’École polytechnique. Tout en occupant le poste de chef de correspondance aux Forges de Pompey (Meurthe-et-Moselle), Calinon se distingue par ses travaux sur la mécanique, la géométrie et la philosophie, travaux qui lui permettront de devenir membre titulaire de la société des sciences de Nancy le 1er mai 1885.
