Humans in outer space: Existential fulfilment or frustration? Existential, psychological, social and ethical issues for crew on a long-term space mission beyond Earth orbit

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Studies in Space Policy ((STUDSPACE,volume 5))

Abstract

The end is close. On 14 July, at 14.00 Moscow time, we will land again on ‘Earth’”.443 After 105 days of confinement inside the isolation facility at the Russian Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow, the crew, 4 Russians and 2 Europeans, will see the Sun again.444 This closed the pilot stage of the Mars520 mission simulation that was launched by the Russian IBMP institute, in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA), to increase understanding of the psychological and medical aspects of long-duration spaceflight.
