Abstract
BRAIN-MASSAGE In 1967 the legendary Marshall McLuhan published a book entitled The Medium is the Massage. The phrase immediately entered artistic discourse and has often been cited since — though nearly almost always incorrectly in the German-speaking world: the medium is the massage, not the message. McLuhan subsumes many things under the concept of medium, not only clothing and money, but also writing. He sees the medium as an extension of human beings and their natural senses. The many examples he cites include the chair, which represents an extension of the posterior, clothing, which extends the skin, and the wheel, which elongates the foot. He also argues that the content of a medium is a further medium. The content of a film is the script, the content of the script is writing, that of writing is language, and that of language is the thought process. Such was the insight provided by McLuhan, the magician of the media age.
