Abstract
Satellite viruses contain particles and genomes that have structural and genetic features which indicate a viral origin but have lost (or never had) the ability to replicate by themselves in susceptible plant hosts. They lack an identifiable gene for a replicase of their own and so, in order to replicate, they need to be a dependent partner in a mixed infection with another virus, usually referred to as the helper virus. The helper virus is presumed to supply the replicase function the satellite virus lacks, but it is not needed for particle formation, since the satellite virus codes for its own capsid protein.
