Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use Among Latinos

  • Chapter
Book cover Alternative Medicine for the Elderly

Abstract

Present day Latin American culture has been shaped by its Indian, African, and Spanish origins. Health beliefs and knowledge about disease stem from the com-bination of Spanish traditions introduced by the colonizers, the health practices of indigenous groups and African slaves, and learned biomedical knowledge. As such, the use of complementary and alternative medicines in the form of herbs, massage, prayer, and magic is prevalent and represents an important element of the health practices of Latinos, particularly the elderly, that can not be underestimated [1, 9–12].
