Abstract
The suitability of an area for farming depends on its agricultural potential as defined by topographic and climatic factors and the nature of its soils. Such an assessment gives only a static impression of the physical environment at a given time. It may suggest theoretical “standards” of fertility and its improvement in view of optimizing cropping potential, but recommendations for proper management or improvement are not given; however, it is necessary to understand what is involved in changes in physicochemical and biological components of the medium.
