Abstract
Prior to the actual pre-operative planning of implant placement, the restorative dentist and the periodontologist/oral surgeon should consider the patient’s general health to establish whether there are any absolute or relative contra-indications for a surgical intervention and in particular the placement of implants. Psychiatric disorders, haemophilia and a recent myocardial infarction are typical examples of definite contra-indications. Diabetes, smoking, radiotherapy, sclerodermia are examples of relative contra-indications.
