Abstract
Approximately 10% of couples in the United Kingdom will be destined to suffer from infertility, which can be defined as a failure to conceive after regular sexual intercourse for a period of 1 year. The investigation of such couples amounts to a major investment both in time and money. Prominent amongst these investigations is the assessment of fallopian tube patency. The reasons for this are threefold:
-
1.
To diagnose a cause of infertility.
-
2.
If at least one tube is patent, it might be possible to stimulate folliculogenesis.
-
3.
If both tubes are blocked, the couple can be referred for in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
