Abstract

The present review is intended to give a brief introduction into technical and physical aspects of submm astronomy. After that, an overview on interesting topics and recent discoveries in galactic and extragalactic research is made, including submm continuum observations of pre-main sequence and main sequence stars, normal and starburst galaxies and radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars. In the case of thermal emission, the observation of submm radiation provides a promising way to estimate the temperature of the dust and the total mass of gas associated with the individual classes of objects. For quasars, where the emission is generally assumed to be non-thermal in origin, the submm regime turns out to be a powerful tool in order to detect separate spectral components and to discriminate between possibly thermal and non-thermal radiation.
