Abstract

Obvious progress has been registered in recent years in establishing the composition and structure of petroleum hydrocarbons. Evidence is provided by the impressive number of hydrocarbons identified in crudes (over 700). However, the complexity of emerging problems has also increased manifold. It suffices to mention the determination of the sterical structure of isosteranes originally discovered in petroleums. However, this is not the sole example of how a new type of hydrocarbon is identified in petroleum. A similar occurrence 50 years ago was the discovery of adamantane, which served as the basis for a new and original scientific discipline — the chemistry of polyhedranes.
