Modulation of Nonspecific Defense Mechanisms in the Neonate

  • Conference paper
Immunology of the Neonate

Abstract

In the neonate there is a striking biological paradox: the deficiency of defense mechanisms is associated with an elevated risk of tissue damage due to activation of the inflammatory process. In addition, a variety of defense patterns can be elicited, i.e., multifactorial immaturity of several components; latent activation of some activities; episodes of sudden, frequently uncontrolled functional hyperactivity; and exhaustion or deactivation of various metabolic responses.
