Abstract
There is no question that hypertension accelerates the development of atherosclerosis. Dustan [90], in 1970, summarized the mechanisms by which hypertension appears to act, the most important being an elevation of the intra-arterial pressure. Endothelial lesions produced by abnormalities of blood flow may also have causal significance. A third mechanism may involve elevated levels of circulating catecholamines or other vasoactive substances which increase endothelial permeability.
