Growth of the Patient on CAPD

  • Chapter
CAPD in Children

Abstract

The maintenance of growth in the child on dialysis remains a challenge to the pediatric nephrologist. Betts and Magrath [1] presented data concerning the natural history of growth in children with renal insufficiency. They demonstrated that growth was most disturbed in those patients who had renal insufficiency present from birth. These patients grew very poorly during the first 2 years of life. Between the ages of 2 and 11 years of age the children grew at near normal rates, but did not regain the growth lost during the first 2 years of life. Therefore, as a group, children with the onset of renal insufficiency during the first 2 years of life remained small, whether treated conservatively or with dialysis.
