Embryology and Taxonomy

  • Chapter
Embryology of Angiosperms

Abstract

The quest for a natural system of classification of flowering plants has involved consideration of many botanical disciplines to include embryology. Indeed, comparative embryology has been an important factor in revealing the relationships of taxa at all levels, and many contributions from this field have been summarized in the writings of Maheshwari (1950, 1963), Davis (1966), Johri (1967, 1970), Palser (1975), Poddubnaya-Arnoldi (1976), Kapil and Bhatnagar (1980) and Bhojwani and Bhatnagar (1983). To discover true phylogenetic relationships remains an obsession among botanists in spite of the recent exciting advancements in other aspects of plant sciences, and new contributions from embryology toward this end are replete.
