Some General Considerations in the Surgical Treatment of Renal and Ureteric Stone

Abstract

Before considering the techniques of the various operations in use for the treatment of renal stone, it is appropriate to consider some of the factors relevant to the operations for the removal of renal calculi taken as a whole. Some limitations to operative procedure are imposed by the anatomy of the renal vasculature. The extent to which incisions can be made in the renal parenchyma without too much resultant damage, the amount of the total renal tissue in the body which can be removed without jeopardizing the health of the patient, and the extent to which a completely obstructed kidney can recover after removal of the obstruction, have considerable relevance to the surgery of renal stone.
