Abstract
Spider blood plasma is characterized by its blue color and a high content of protein. Without doubt it is involved in respiratory function, and it is our aim (1) to elucidate this function at the molecular level and (2) to relate the molecular qualities to physiological traits so that, some day in the future, we may arrive at a mechanistic description of respiration in these animals. We shall first describe results of chemical studies and later turn to aspects of oxygen transport in the intact animal. This account should be viewed in conjunction with the report by Dr. Loewe (Loewe et al., Chap. 7, this vol.) on the relation between oxygen binding and quaternary structure.
