Abstract
Perennial herbs or rarely unbranched trees, generally with sympodial rhizomes, which are often thick and rich in starch. The roots arise opposite the xylem strands of the rhizomes. The root hairs develop from cells much shorter than other epidermal cells. Velamen is lacking. Vessels are present in the roots and generally have scalariform perforation plates, simple in many Marantaceae, and mixed simple and scalariform in other Marantaceae and in Cannaceae, Costaceae and Musaceae.
