Activities in Lying

  • Chapter
Book cover Right in the Middle

Abstract

In the early stages after the onset of hemiplegia, when the patient has little control over the movements of his trunk, he can practise activities in lying in preparation for moving against gravity. Because the patient does not have to hold himself erect against the pull of gravity in this position, the activities can be performed with less extensor activity and effort, and the therapist is able to ensure that the movements are carried out accurately and economically. Not only in the early stages, but also in every stage of his rehabilitation, the patient will benefit from activities carried out in a lying position for the same reason. Functional activities such as walking (stance and swing phase), balance reactions, selective arm movements, breathing and speaking can be improved by the following activities.
