Abstract
A unique approach to the Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was utilized and proved very effective. On day one, Situation Papers by local experts served to describe the needs of the Poland and its neighboring countries, Special Presentations gave a look at trends in western Europe and the U.S.A. in contrast and State-of-the Art overviews described applicable scientific work and technological tools and possible R&D directions. Prior to the workshop each Invited Expert produced draft position paper on a pertinent topic. The papers were distributed to all participants on arrival. This proved to be effective in focusing the discussions. On day two, six Working Groups (on focused topics) deliberated about the scientific/technological needs and related factors of politics, economics, etc. which might affect research progress. This was very dynamic, produced excellent draft findings and created a network of people for future contacts and activities. On day three, a Meeting of the Whole Delegation heard the Working Group summaries and recommendations and had dialogue to revise the findings and set priorities. Succinct written drafts of final reports of the Working Groups were prepared on site via computer. This turnaround time was very useful. Chairpersons of Working Groups and individual authors of position papers finalized these after the workshop. The submitted results are the basis for the scientific conclusions given below.
