Zusammenfassung
Die Linderung von Schmerzen während des Geburtsvorganges ist ein Thema, das die Menschen seit dem Altertum beschäftigt. Wurde der Geburtsschmerz bis in das 19. Jahrhundert als „natürlich“ und somit unabwendbar betrachtet, so war es insbesondere das Verdienst von Simpson und Snow (Stichwort: Durchtrittsnarkose „a la reine“), daß auch die Anästhesie für die Geburtshilfe zunehmende Beachtung und Akzeptanz in der Öffentlichkeit fand.
