A New Methodology Concept in Aquatic Ecotoxicology: the Integrated Approach from Laboratory to Outdoor Experiments

Abstract

The newly emerging field of ecosystem health requires much data on disturbed functions and structures of these systems. New concepts of data collecting in aquatic systems, for ecotoxicological studies, are expanding and we present a multiscale approach based on laboratory (monitoring and plurispecific experiments) and outdoor systems. Microcosm and mesocosm studies make it possible to monitor the fate of pollutants and the effects on the structure and the main functions of the ecosystems. For aquatic ecosystems, this approach seems necessary in order to get a complementary set of information for medium and/or long term evaluations. This methodological concept will be developed through examples dealing with pesticides. In this paper, the effects of the contaminants on energy transfers in aquatic ecosystems (photosynthesis, respiration) will be analyzed for the possibility of monitoring complex ecosystems and for risk assessment.
