Abstract
Head and neck cancers represent roughly 3–5% of the total new cancer cases. In the United States 40,000 new cases are observed each year. The male-to-female ratio is 3:1. While head-and-neck tumors were primarily tumors of older males, a significant increase of the incidence has been observed in female and younger patients. Significant risk factors are nicotine and alcohol abuse. Characteristically, head and neck tumors often become occult for a long time either due to their primary localization of the tumor and/or due to a rather late consultation of a physician.
