Abstract

After the discovery of an icosahedral (I) Al-Mn phase (Shechtman et al. 19841), there was immediately great interest in determining whether similar phases would form in other alloy systems. A number of quasicrystals (QCs), especially Al-based QCs with a wide variety of elements, have now been discovered. In addition, Mg-Zn-Rare Earth (RE) QCs with a large localized magnetic moment have recently been found by Niikura et al. (1994).
