Zusammenfassung
Der jüngste Zeitabschnitt der Erdgeschichte wird als die „Erdneuzeit“ (Känozoische(s) Ära/Erathem) bezeichnet. Dieser Zeitabschnitt erstreckt sich vom Ende des „Erdmittelalters“ (Mesozoische(s) Ära/Erathem) bis heute, dem Holozän und umschliesst das „Tertiär“ und das in der älteren Literatur gebräuchliche „Quartär“. Das Känozoikum beginnt 65 millionen Jahre vor heute mit einem der spektakulärsten Ereignisse der Erdgeschichte. Dieses markiert die Grenze zwischen dem Mesozoikum (bzw. der Kreide) und dem Känozoikum (bzw. dem Tertiär): ein Asteroid ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf der Erde eingeschlagen und hat weitreichende Veränderungen der Lithosphäre, Biosphäre und des Klimas auf unserem Planeten verursacht. Heute nimmt man an, dass die 200 km im Durchmesser grosse Struktur des Chicxulub-Kraters in Yucatan, Mexiko, durch diesen Asteroiden-Einschlag geschaffen wurde.
