Abstract
Rehabilitation aims at the highest possible level of independence in daily life for the patient with hemiplegia. For the adult patient, being independent is the first vital step to being able to return to his former life style. Independence means no longer being an invalid, dependent on help from others for all everyday activities. Being independent enables the patient to choose where, when and with whom he would like to be at any given time, and even allows him the choice to be on his own. The fact that he knows he can manage is important for the patient, but a little help can often go a long way and should not be rigidly withheld.
