Abstract
DNA sequencing is the most powerful technique used in molecular biology. Determination of a DNA sequence is the only method in biological science that generates data that are not biased by previous assumption, hypotheses or experimental design. It is therefore not surprising that DNA sequencing has revealed many unexpected facts concerning gene structure, regulation of gene expression, organization of genomes, as well as, discovered new genes never seen before. Advances in large scale sequencing also brought about new scientific disciplines - genomics and functional genomics, devoted to analyzing whole genomes and their function (Hieter and Boguski, 1997). Knowing the complete sequences of a dozen microbial genomes and expected completion of sequencing of many other organisms, including humans, will without doubt change how biology is done in the future (Doolittle, 1998; DeRisi et al. 1997; Tatusow et al., 1997).
