Part of the book series: Update in Intensive Care Medicine ((UICMSOFT,volume 39))

Abstract

The triage decision determines whether a patient is admitted into an intensive care unit (ICU) and for some patients, this decision will determine whether the patient lives or dies. When standing next to a patient’s bed and deciding whether or not to admit the patient, or alternatively, when forced to refuse a patient who could benefit from ICU care due to lack of space, triage decisions may become heart wrenching dilemmas.
