Abstract

‘Creative Classrooms’ (CCR) are conceptualized as innovative learning environments that fully embed the potential of ICT to innovate learning and teaching practices in formal, non-formal and informal settings. The proposed multi-dimensional concept for CCR consists of eight encompassing and interconnected key dimensions. In order to support experimentation and implementation of these key dimensions of CCR, a set of 28 reference parameters (‘building blocks’) is proposed. The aim is twofold: (i) to unravel the most innovative elements of the multi-dimensional CCR concept and (ii) to depict the systemic approach needed for the sustainable implementation and progressive mainstreaming of Creative Classrooms across Europe. Last but not least, two cases of ICT-enabled innovation for learning are presented showing how CCR building blocks are combined and implemented in real-life settings configuring profoundly diverse types of CCR.

The views expressed in this article are purely those of the authors and they should not be regarded as the official position of the European Commission.

Notes

  1. 1.

CCR concept originates from European Commission – DG EAC policies with the aim to support the mainstreaming of ICT-enabled innovation for learning. Currently, an EU funding call is open for policy experimentations on the implementation of innovative learning environments using ICT (http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/llp/funding/2012/call_et_2012_en.php).

  2. 2.

The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) is one of the seven scientific institutes of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). IPTS consists of five research units, one of which is the Information Society Unit.

  3. 3.

The cases presented in this paper have been developed since the time of writing (September 2012). New publications with updated information are made available at http://is.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pages/EAP/SCALECCR.html

  4. 4.

To this end, European Commission has proposed expanding eTwinning as part of the new “Erasmus for all: the EU Programme for Education, Training, Youth and Sport” from 2014-2020 and adopting a more systemic/institutional approach (http://ec.europa.eu/education/erasmus-for-all/doc/legal_en.pdf).
