Abstract

The discovery of radio-frequency radiation from the Galactic System is due to Jansky 1. In 1931 while engaged in a study of receiver noise in the region of short wavelengths (λ = 14.6 m) he observed that part of this noise came preferentially from a certain azimuth. From the variation of this azimuth with the time of the day, and with the time of the year, he concluded that the source was related to the nuclear region of the Galactic System.
