Abstract
Obstructive uropathy describes a condition where renal function has been adversely affected by impairment of flow of urine within the collecting system. This condition can be congenital, acquired, reversible, and irreversible. Peters proposed a similar definition for congenital urinary obstruction in children of “a condition of impaired urinary drainage which, if uncorrected, will limit the ultimate functional potential of a developing kidney” [32]. Obstructive uropathy is an important cause of end-stage renal disease in newborns and children [38]. Identification of obstruction and relief of it can minimize its deleterious effect on renal function. This seems obvious, however current clinical criteria, in the form of laboratory or radiographic investigations, to recognize this category of patients is challenging.
