Abstract

These presenting signs concern exclusively the breast. A surview of the many and diverse disorders of congenital or acquired origin is listed in Tables 12.1 and 12.2.

Spontaneous pain, tenderness, and firm swelling of the breast are observed mainly in acquired disorders and may be recorded in a cyclic fashion as in 25 % of female teenagers with premenstrual syndrome and sometimes already before menarche. The observation of diverse symptoms 7 days before beginning of menstruation is probably underreported; only just one of ten young women is symptomless. Unilateral or bilateral nipple pain may be observed as transient phenomenon in the second stage of breast development.
