Abstract
Maltese is the national language of the Maltese archipelago, which consists of the islands Malta, Gozo (Għawdex) and Comino (Kemmuna). Together with English, Maltese is also the official language of Malta. According to the Demographic Review 2009 by the National Statistics Office of Malta, the estimated Maltese population (excluding foreigners) in Malta for the end of the year 2009 was 396,278. It is estimated that today, due to emigration phases from Malta mostly in the 1950s and 1960s, roughly the same number of expatriate native speakers lives abroad (mostly in the United Kingdom, Australia, USA and Canada).
